Updated February 2008:
James Boyd 1 b. abt 1757; m. Hannah Gibson Sept 8, 1779 in Bedford Co., VA.
Last November 10, 2007, "Helen Johnson" <hjohnson@iowatelecom.net> another researcher of my Boyd line offered this:
"Found a marriage license for James Boyd who married Hannah Gibson Sept 8, 1779 in Bedford county VA.
Now my theory : they must be the parents of our James ( who was born in 1783) who married Nancy Simpson because our James was born in VA so the census states and the first child Elitha was born there. Also my guess our James named one of his daughters Hannah which could be after his mother."
A search of www.familysearch.org turned up with a good possibilityf or this James Boyd:

Mary Toft's Family Record - in her words:
"When I started doing genealogy in 1968 I wasn't aware of the need for proof of my sources.
Here's what I have:
I followed Valentine Boyd through the Midwest using census records. Each census record listed below stated that he was born in Tennessee about 1810. His wife Sarah Grooms Boyd was listed as born in Ohio about 1815. One census stated that he could not read or write. Sophia, Hannah [b 19 Jul 1837], and Horace A. were born in Ohio. James and Elizabeth were born in Indiana after 1839. Adeline and Lucinda were born in Illinois after 1841. Wm Swaisie [b. 04 Nov 1848], Mahala [b. 09 Sep 1853] and Martha [b. 1856] were all born in Iowa.
The 1856 (Special) Iowa Census lists Valentine age 45, Sarah age 40, and seven younger children in Appanoose County, Union Twp, Iowa Valentine was a farmer.
In 1858, a transient family moved into a house on the property where Boyds lived. The entire family became ill and all died. Sarah and her daughters went to the home to lay-out the family. They then learned that the family had smallpox. Sarah and some of the children caught the disease, and Sarah, James [age 18], and Martha [age 2] died.
Hannah Boyd Shunkwiler was expecting her first child, so she was given a serum. The doctor gave it in both arms, and they became so sore, she had to rest them on pillows for about six weeks. My aunt said that Valentine had survived the smallpox earlier.
In the 1860 Iowa Census Valentine was a farmer in Appanoose County, Iowa and had 3 children living with him. Lucinda [age 13], Wm Swaisie [age 8], and Mahala [age 7].
We found a second marriage record of Valentine Boyd to Elizabeth Richmond in 1861.
By the 1870 Iowa Census Valentine was 58 and living alone. According to my Aunt Zula Taylor, Valentine died at the home of his daughter, Adeline Gilliland. She didn't recall the year. She thought that Valentine and Sarah were buried at Bailey Cemetery somewhere in Appanoose County, Iowa. There are no headstones that I know of."
